When you calve in April and May, that means June is the time to pair out and take the ole girls to their summer staycation destinations. This is a process that seems to drag on and on. We take pairs that have heifer calves on them to certain pastures and then the steer calf pairs go to other pastures. This does create a level of work for us at this time of year that we really don’t have time for. But, considering our pasture conditions are still pretty weak in our area, this management step will give us some choices if we need to wean early and pull off of grass. So, it is a necessary evil.
We are all beyond tired and getting a wee bit crabby. A cooler day today should help us get the last of the outbound pairs out of here. Which will leave us with a bunch of late born calves that still need to be worked and receive their Jones Ranch, J upside down U, on their side.
Despite the break neck pace we have been keeping outside, my co-habitants make it known that they still need to eat. My grill has been my pinch hitter. Whether it be grilling burgers or steaks, I love grilling this time of year.
Ranch wife pro tip….I love having burgers pattied at the butcher when we have a critter processed. There is an added expense, but they thaw so easily and can be on the grill in 5 minutes, sizzling away.
I also throw a couple of extra steaks on the grill. Tomorrow I am going to share with you how I took a couple of leftover T-Bone steaks and made a quick, awesome meal of BBQ steak flatbread pizza!
