Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

I know I am behind my usual schedule for my garden. By now I usually have all my root crops in and my cool season greens. And frankly, the April wind left me battered and beaten and honestly avoiding working in my garden. But, the spring moisture has finally arrived and this damp crisp air has me invigorated to lay in garden rows of cool season crops like radishes, greens and root crops.

That is the thing about gardening and life. Allow yourself some grace. Go at your own pace and run your own race. I have friends who have their entire gardens in the ground. You go! I am cheering you on. It doesn’t mean I am giving up on myself or my garden dreams, I will be just a little delayed in eating that first radish or serving my family that first homegrown lettuce salad.

I have a depleting pantry to fill, so there is no time to compare or throw a pity party. So, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t have your garden where you want it to be. I’m right there with you, but I am ready to get it tackled. Rome wasn’t built in a day and my garden never gets planted in a day. So, there is that.

In happy, spring harvesting news, I picked my first rhubarb of the season and threw together a big pan of strawberry rhubarb crisp. I have some recipes up my sleeve this season for all those spring flavors that we love! I can think of no better spring delicacy to treat my family to than rhubarb!

In the meantime, you can check out all of my recipes on the Your Ag Network app or website. Have a great day from all of us at the great American radio station!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
