Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

Thanks for tuning in to Ranch Raised. Like many this wind has me sort of beaten and battered. Personally, I am having a hard time finding the will to work in my garden.

I have these visions of trying to plant my radish and lettuce seeds only to have them actually germinate in the next county over because they blew away, right out of my hand. So, while I not-so-patiently wait for Mother Nature to cooperate with me, I have found another domestic distraction that has captivated me. SOURDOUGH!

I think you can all tell that I love baking and I do love baking bread. During the pandemic there was a long stretch of months where there was no yeast to be found on grocery store shelves anywhere close to me. Yeast was as extinct, like canning lids. It had me thinking that I probably should be learning alternative ways to bake bread.

A few weeks ago a friend brought me a jar of her sourdough starter. I have pampered, nurtured and cared for that little baby. I have studied the internet for all of the sourdough tips and tricks. I am by no means an expert but I do have one beautiful boule under my belt and a quart jar full of discard, sorry sourdough slang, in my refrigerator, so I guess you could say things are getting pretty serious around here. Now I want to learn from all of you! Go to my RR FB page and share with me your favorite sourdough tips and recipes!

Come back tomorrow to hear what is going on, on the Jones Ranch. I will give you a hint, it involves the ranch tri-fecta: kitchen, kids, and cattle!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
