(Vermillion, SD) The South Dakota Farm Show at USD’s Dakota Dome is an annual tradition for the folks of eastern South Dakota, western Iowa, and northeast Nebraska. A pretty long-standing one at 42 of the last 43 years (thanks, covid). This year the long time host decided it’s time to bring this community event to an end to focus on athletics. The brothers who run the show, John and Jason Riles of Midwest Shows, found out the same way we all did… via the news this morning. KTIV released this announcement from the University of South Dakota:

The University of South Dakota has been proud to host the Dakota Farm Show for over 40 years, and we deeply value the relationships and traditions built during that time.

As our Division I programs continue to grow, so do the training and operational needs of our student‑athletes, coaches, and facilities teams.

After thoughtful evaluation, we determined that transitioning away from hosting the Farm Show is the best path to support this progress. We appreciate the many years of collaboration and the positive impact it has had on our community.

This news comes the same day that the university was set to speak with Midwest Shows about the future of the farm show. It left the Riles brothers in shock. They were under the impression the university was ready to discuss extending the show on a year-by-year basis till the new athletic facilities are ready.

This show brings in thousands of guests who shop, dine, and stay overnight in Vermillion. Restaurant owner Matt Hunhoff from neighboring Yankton had this to say:

“Feels like they are screwing over the town. Restaurants, retail, and hotels all see a spike in business that week. Sales tax dollars add to the community.”

South Dakota rancher Jake Warembourg, who mans the purple wave booth at the show every year, shared his thoughts as well.

“I wish they would keep it because it has been beneficial to our auction company and has been a great place to meet up with area ranchers, farmers, and contractors.”

We will continue to hold out hope that a new venue nearby will welcome the Dakota Farm Show or that the university will come around to the idea of supporting agriculture and their community. We will keep you updated on this topic going forward as things develop.
