Just a good ole snow day!
We finally received some snow the last 24 hours. Prior to this snow, I’ve used the broom on my back step once this winter and nothing more. As I was doing dishes this past week looking out my window, I was watching dirt blow down the driveway with a lump in my throat. I know the old timers always say the best time to be in a drought is during winter. And while I may not have the years behind and wisdom of some, I’ve been around the sun enough times to feel the anxiety that an open, dry winter brings to many ranchers after we have had such a dry fall.
But today, I will smile looking at the fresh blanket of white, pure snow. It is light and fluffy, doesn’t have much moisture, but it cuts the dust down and gives us something else to look out besides the brown landscape that we were getting pretty bored of seeing. We can still easily get around to all the cattle to feed. There isn’t much wind and for that we are thankful.
Church has already been canceled for this evening, so we will have a cozy day doing a lot of school work in anticipation of all the fun we have planned tomorrow in town. Today we will finish up nearly 100 Valentines for the local party with other homeschoolers and for our cross county Valentines swap!
I’ve got a big pot of cheesy potato soup on the the stove loaded with different cheese, bacon, and white & sweet potatoes. The baking bug might bite us later this afternoon, too!
While this won’t be a drought buster by any means. For today, we will just be thankful for a good ole snow day and being another day closer to spring!
Slow down if you are traveling. Stay safe, stay warm and have a great day!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
