Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
I knew you just couldn’t resist my big, I mean little announcement! Thanks for coming back to Ranch Raised!
Despite all animal husbandry measures and best laid plans, sometimes mother nature’s forces, ehem, hormones are stronger than corral fences and unplanned matings occur. I saw the shenanigans in play around 5 months ago. I shifted to a state of denial and told myself that young Peanut Butter Cup was probably too young to conceive despite Big Whopper’s best tries. Or maybe it was just an innocent case of tag happening in the barnyard?
But then the new addition made its appearance this week. As I was leaving the yard, I glanced over to see Peanut Butter proudly licking off her new little baby that looked like a fluffy little marshmallow basking in the June sun. I couldn’t help but say, “ahhh look at that little fluffernutter!”
I guess I should back up and tell you that I am referring to goats. So, yes, we welcomed a cute little LaMancha doeling this week. Despite being unplanned and out of season, no one is disappointed, especially my daughter who loves her earless LaMancha herd.
I probably sound like a broken record on Ranch Raised, but there is something about the outside of an animal that is good for the inside of mankind. We have experienced thousands of births here on the Jones Ranch and each one is still held in the highest miraculous regard whether it be a baby colt, calf, or a little four-pound Fluffernutter!
Have a great day everyone! I’ve got a little baby goat to snuggle with!
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.
Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
