Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
It is the last Friday in May, so thanks for tuning in to our final Beef Month Fun, Fact Friday!
It is clear that beef is a favorite protein and meal staple, but cattle provide you SO much beyond that ground round and sirloin, that I bet you have never even considered. The other by-products of cattle are just as amazing as the red meat they produce.
From cattle hides we get fabulous leathers that go on to be luggage, clothing, and sporting goods, even seats in cars! That hair on the hide is probably in your next paint brush. Underneath the hide, from the fat products go into candles, cosmetics, crayons, shaving creams, and soaps just to name a few. That awesome collogen goes on to be used in adhesives on band aids, wallpaper, glue and sheetrock.
The medical industry taps into these by-products. Insulin comes from the cow pancreas. Heparin and B12 come from the liver. Bone marrow is used to treat blood disorders and soft cartilage is used in cosmetic surgeries. From the blood, they extract iron and so many other awesome blood products used every day in the medical field.
I bet it is impossible to live your day without relying on a cattle byproduct! Even the asphalt you drive on, everyday has a binding agent from the fat!
Cattle power my world, I think they do yours too, even if you didn’t know it. All the more reason to celebrate by throwing your favorite cut of USA beef on the grill this weekend and hitting it with a shot of Rick’s Salt! Have a safe and festive Memorial Day weekend from all of us at Your Ag Network!
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.
Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
