We give thanks for those who have went before us to fight to preserve the western way life. Less than 2% of this country are involved in the cattle industry. We have a massive responsibility on our shoulders to hold the line on personal property rights, restoring our broken cattle market, and gaining consumer trust all the while we put up hay, fight drought conditions, calve in blizzards, creatively budget during times of inflation, and lest we not forget, hold the hands of little ones who want to be the next generation of ranchers and cattle producers.
All of this is in very sharp focus for me as we shipped the bigger end of our steers this week. Our two oldest daughters have become very capable hands on horseback. They have become almost as good as their dad and I in the sorting pen….almost 😉. They are great at helping us load trucks. And after the shipping day is over, this momma breathes deep, heads back to the house to check on my newborn son and wonder, “will it be enough?” Will the check be enough to cover the $5 diesel, the $200 a ton hay, the supplies that have doubled in prices? Will any of this be enough to actually allow our next generation to come to the ranch and continue to do what generations before them have done? I have always said that I didn’t need to make it easy for my kids to come back, but I will fight with everything that I have in me to make sure it will possible.
Our kind are tetering on extinction under immense financial, social, and government pressure. But, even under the stress of it all, there is no bunch more thankful to live this life on the land.
