Frost, Flooding, and the Fall Run! Welcome to a special Friday edition of the Hot Barn Report!

This week’s weather has packed a punch across the upper Midwest in the heart of Hot Barn land. An active weather pattern moved through that brought snow, rain, and icy mix to parts of Wyoming, the western Dakotas, and western Nebraska. Moving to the east the warmer temps were able to keep the precipitation in the form rain and boy oh boy it dumped a lot of it in Central Nebraska, northward into South Dakota.

This is a less than ideal situation for trying to wean calves or put wheels under them to market. Infact, we recognize the extreme stress that it causes for all involved, both 2 legged and 4 legged. During a week that we celebration National Farmer Day coupled with the challenging weather situation that many have faced this week, I think it is only fitting to recognize the men and women in agriculture.

Fall is an extremely stressful time of year trying to harvest the crops while dodging the curveballs that Mother Nature and Lady Luck are throwing your way. Cattle producers pray at night for smooth weaning scenarios while losing sleep of the many stressors that plague them.

There are so many other people involved in agriculture that may not directly produce commodities, but they serve an important place in the process of ag commerce. The truckers who transport our ag commodities do the very best to keep all wheels rolling while sacrificing time away from their families on the long hauls.

We salute the many people who provide a marketing platform for our ag commodities, namely the cattle auction markets who provide the very best opportunity for true price discovery. When my husband and I were first together he worked for many years at our local sale barn as we were two young kids trying to scrape by. It gave me a deep appreciation for those who spend all day and night on their feet in all kinds of crazy weather, unloading, sorting, penning back and loading out cattle. There are the bookkeepers and the office staff that work inside the sale barn. In times of down markets, they see the deep lines and worry on every producer’s face, infact, they feel it in their bones. When their consignors hit a lick, they are there to celebrate the good times, too.

There are the veterinarians, the nutritionists, the bankers, the order buyers, the cattle feeders, and really the list goes on and on. At this time of year when the stress is high and the stakes are too, I just want to put out some positive vibes and say that we at the Hot Barn Report see all of you and are grateful to be a small part of your world. If less than 2% of America’s population are providing the food and fiber for this nation, then our circle may be small, but it is mighty!

It is prime cattle marketing time, and our Hot Barns strive to do the very best to serve you. So, if you are a producer local to them give them a call. They are ready to help you with all of your cattle marketing needs. Stockmens Livestock, Lemmon Livestock, North Platte Stockyards, St. Onge/Newell, Platte Livestock Market, Tri County Stockyards, Torrington Livestock, Creighton Livestock Market, Bassett Livestock Auction, Mobridge Livestock, Ogallala Livestock Auction Market, and Presho Livestock.
