No Formula, No Food, No Farms! Welcome to America and this week’s Friday edition of Hot Barn Report.

America’s consumers are now gripped by the latest food shortage that is affecting our youngest population. No doubt, we all feel for the families that are struggling to find formula to feed their infants. This is America! How is this happening? But, why are we so shocked? Just a handful of months ago it was our nation’s meat counters that were empty as consumers panicked. Next month it could be the bananas or the lord forbid, the potato chip aisle.

This is the same song, different verse. America’s cheap food policy has been falsely championed by our government. For decades a banner has flown over the American land literally boasting that we can feed our nation for less than anyone else. As we all know, someone has to pay the piper. Behind the curtain it has been the American farmer and rancher who have been shouldering the burden. Continually being forced to supply more and meet more stringent standards. It has been carrot after carrot, we have had to chase, but it was all stick. We would never be paid anymore in this commodity system.

Infact, we are supposed to swallow the fact that multinational corporate conglomerates are boasting of BILLION dollar quarterly profits, while the American producers are floundering. Independent American producers cannot carry the load any longer and that is how they will break us. They know they just have to run the clock they have all the advantage in the long game. Infact, they are counting on DC to be their accomplices and so far it is working.

Beyond eroding American agriculture, now that cheap food policy is crumbling and the consumers can’t find cheap food at all, let alone much choice in food. And this is what happens in a centralized, concentrated food system. In the US, 4 companies control 90% of the baby formula industry. Same song, second verse. 4 companies also control around 85% of the beef processed in America. The concentration of our food system in the hands of so few participants creates not only an incredibly anticompetitive market but also a desperately fragile food system.

I would say that the American agriculture and consumers have been compromised long enough at the hands of these corporations. When is DC going to stop compromising and stand up to them? Lack of enforcement of laws on the books, is what led us here. Is DC going to right the ship? Or will they continue to value corporations over consumers and cattlemen?
