I don’t know whether it’s ironic or insulting but I’ve got all the details for you today, on this special Friday edition of the Hot Barn Report.
During the month of May, which has historically been known as “Beef Month” in these parts, it is interesting to see two proposed rulemakings by our US Department of Agriculture. The first being a proposal “to amend the regulations governing the importation of certain animals, meat, and other animal products by allowing, under certain conditions, the importation of fresh (chilled or frozen) beef from Paraguay.”
Let me remind listeners that just over 10 years ago, Paraguay had to halt the exports of beef due to a Foot and Mouth Disease crisis in their country. Hundreds of head of cattle had to be discarded as a measure to stop its spread and now our own government is considering allowing their beef back into our country. What happened to all that concern about herd health and biosecurity?
Back to the comment period, you can leave your comments on this issue on the federal register by searching “Importation of Fresh Beef from Paraguay.” Comments are due by May 26. I found the comments that are currently on there interesting. Apparently, you don’t have to be a US citizen to comment on our federal register as a handful of Paraguayans have left their encouragement of the US opening our borders to their beef.
In other news, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) published a proposed rule in the Federal Register to adjust membership on the Beef Promotion and Research Board to reflect shifts in cattle inventory levels since the last board reapportionment in 2020, as required by the rules governing the board. Written comments on the proposed rule must be received by June 1, 2023.
Under the proposal, total board membership would decrease by two members, from 101 to 99, and would include the following changes:
Domestic cattle producer representation on the board would decrease from 94 to 92 members. The remaining 7 members would be importer representation.
The state of Idaho would gain one member.
The states of Montana, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin would lose one member.
As the US continues to experience cattle inventory constriction it is completely plausible that domestic representation would lose seats to increased importer representation in the future. Coupled with the fact that our USDA is proposing to add another country, of suspect disease control, to the long roster of countries that we import from all the while the American consumer continues to be denied the option to know what country their beef comes from makes me wonder what happened to the “US” in USDA?
