Welcome to the Friday edition of the HOT BARN REPORT
Heard ONLY on American radio stations across the nation and online at hotbarnreport.com!

Karina Jones, Field Director for R-Calf USA joins us each Friday from her ranch in the heart of Nebraska covering what’s new and important to the family farm and ranch.

Batters up! I’m not talking baseball but instead next week will be a big week in the beef and cattle industry, with all eyes on Washington DC. We better have some lawmakers and stakeholders prepared to swing for the fences on behalf of rural America!

In an unprecedented move, we have both the Senate and the House holding hearings next week with the cattle and beef industry sharply in focus. But these hearings differ from each other. The Senate Ag Committee Hearing on Tuesday is regarding the specific proposed legislation, S. 4030 The Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act of 2022. Only if you read the bill, you walk away scratching your head thinking, “umm, I think that title is quite a stretch.” I’m not sure that surrendering the power of our fat cattle market to economists and the USDA is going to do our cattle industry any favors. This is the same USDA that is ushering in massive amounts of Brazilian beef imports despite loud calling from all corners of the cattle industry to halt those very imports. Go ahead and tell the Senate Ag Committee exactly what you think. The number that goes directly to the committee is 202-224-2035.

On Wednesday all eyes will switch over to the House Ag Committee hearing. This hearing has a different angle. See there is no legislation introduced on the House side, thus the House cannot hold a hearing on specific legislation that does not exist. The House demanded calling in the CEOs from the Big 4 to answer some hard questions about alleged anti-competitive behaviors. They are also calling in some cattle producers. Their testimony will be compelling, genuine, and something you and I can all relate to. It will come from the heart of rural America. It could be a David vs Goliath showdown.

The days following these two hearings could redirect the future of the cattle industry. And all of us, hold some of the power in our hands. It will be up to us to make it clear to lawmakers what we have to have to make the American cattle industry prosperous, so that we can stay on the land and continue to raise the highest quality beef on the planet. Now is no time to sit on the sideline because we might never ever get on the field again.

Will DC go to bat for the American cattle industry and hit it out of the park for rural America. Or will they take the easy bunt, just to get on base when we are down by two in the final inning. I think next week will tell us which team lawmakers are playing for. So stay tuned to Hot Barn Report and Your Ag Network for a complete wrap up next week.
