Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

Meanwhile back at the ranch. Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.

Ever heard that phrase, “life is life-ing”. Well, “fall is falling” on the Jones Ranch. I often wonder why the good Lord shortens the days in the fall when the to-do list gets longer during this season. Everyday it is an air traffic controllers worst nightmare moving cattle around the ranch. Fall pairs over to this meadow. South spring herd moved north. North spring herd moved south. First calf heifer pairs moved to another meadow. Bring heifer pairs in, wean heifer calves, move their mommas out to start bringing steer pairs in to finish up pre-conditioning. Sorting, sorting, more sorting. Oh, and then when not one, but two gates mysteriously open in the night, that means I will be taking my coffee outside in a to-go cup, to you guessed it, do more sorting at dawn.

We are in a season of ranch chaos where I quietly repeat to myself a few times a day, “tomorrow won’t be this busy,” or “things will slow down next week.” Lies, it’s all lies. I know I live in a personal level of delusion. So today, I will send my 16 year old to town with my grocery list. Both my girls have been spending just as much time in the corrals or horseback as I have. And in turn, they are both great keeping the laundry in rotation, once in a while they will throw a meal together, and we all wish we had another wife around here to tackle the dishes. Soon the steers will be shipped and the heifers sent out, too. Bulls will be put out with the fall herd. More hay will be shipped in. Hopefully all before the snow starts flying. Then we can settle in for a long winter’s nap!

About Karina Jones 536 Articles
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion. Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA. You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch. Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
