Make every day farm & ranch safety day! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
There are a few issues that I use this platform to build awareness for. I apologize because last week was Farm Safety & Health Week and it completely slipped by my radar. With the recent tragedies in farm and ranch country it got me thinking, we really need to remind each other that attention to farm and ranch safety needs to be a top priority everyday of the year.
Despite having a minute sliver of the population involved in production agriculture, the 2022 data for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the agricultural sector is still the most dangerous in America with 417 fatalities. Fall harvest time can be one of the busiest and most dangerous seasons of the year for the agriculture industry. Working around machinery that has an infinite amount of working parts like power take off shafts, augers, and gears grinding at every turn. Not to mention, increased harvest traffic on roads brings a lot more risk to farm machinery related accidents.
Those of us involved in ranching are not immune to accidents. Cows and livestock have mind of their own and sometimes we are not on the same page. Ranchers deal with traversing land that can be unpredictable and dangerous when maneuvering ATVs and UTVs. And of course being horseback doesn’t make us any less susceptible to danger.
All this to say that while we are all in the thick up of it during this active fall season. Please, slow down and think. Please, be safe. Please, take care of one another and most importantly yourself when you are out there doing this work.
