Lets get this fall started! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
So, it’s September first. At first my mind starts to wander dreaming of cooler fall days, sipping coffee a little longer than usual, starting our mornings with our devotions as we slip into our homeschool rhythm. My heart is there but my head is not. And if you are a farmer or rancher right now, I’m sure you are feeling the same way. What should have been a fundamentally strong cattle market for 2026 now feels like a white water rafting trip gone bad. I don’t know if we are going to wreck and be washed up to shore or if we will make it to our destination, bruised and battered either way. Grain farmers are trying to claw their way out of a black hole on their balance sheet that is wanting to swallow them whole.
Now as much as we all want 2026 to be over with we are white knuckling it through this fall season, our payday season for so many. It is a heavy load to carry. There are bills that have to be paid, lots of bills. Bankers calling. Notes coming due. Interest compounding. A Farm Bill that is almost a decade overdue that can’t make it out of Congress. And you know what farmers and ranchers give zero cares about, daylight savings time and the naming of bodies of water.
We just want to scream, “Make it make sense!” And as much as our the financial outlook for farming and ranching is spinning out of control and completely out of our hands, calves still need weaned, crops still need harvested, and we still have pull our boots on and go to work everyday, never a promise of any profit!
