A few years ago suburban America became infatuated with western cowboy culture. Everyone wanted to get them their own Rip and buy a piece of paradise in Montana. Hollywood romanticized life on a cattle ranch and made it look like a 5 star activity vacation.
But America is fickle. And thanks to social media and mainstream news, now, American cattle producers are the heartless villains ripping off mothers at the grocery stores trying to feed their families. My head is literally exploding at the spin!
Over the weekend I watched on social media as ranchers have been ripped end to end and accused of being greedy for selling females instead of growing the herd. We have been blamed for causing beef inflation at every turn. Like we actually set the price for meat in the grocery store.
American cheap food policy built consumer confidence on a house of sand. You may have thought ground beef could stay at $3 a pound forever. But, someone was paying the cost and that was rural America. Ranchers could not feed their own families selling cattle below the cost of production, so they had to sell out. The kids didn’t come back to the ranch. They went to college and built normal lives. Rural America shriveled and now the 99% is wondering why the 1% can’t just lean into the harness harder and pick up another 100 head to calve out to grow the US herd and put some cheap beef back in the meat cooler. It just doesn’t work like that, folks.
