4-H is not just swine and steers. For my family, it also involves a good bit of sewing! There is no 4-H project that brings more nostalgia for me than we start picking out fabrics and patterns and sitting down to sew. I simply love teaching my kids to sew because it takes me right back to the years that I spent sewing with my grandma.
Now, don’t laugh, but I was a fierce sewing competitor. I would study the JCPenny magazines all year deciding which outfit I would love to buy, but instead would sew. Then we would set out find fabric and patterns, which were much easier to find locally in the 90’s. My later 4-H years were spent conquering wool plaids, with coordinating silky lining, and custom covered buttons.
Those miles that I spent stitching taught me so much about problem solving, executing directions, persistence, and learning to love creating. And that is exactly what I see when I walk through county fair exhibit halls, not the ribbon color. I hope that my kids will cherish these skills and memories at the sewing machine as much as I hold them dear.
I hope you all are having a stitching good time with your county fair creations. My youngest daughter has spent the last few days completing a patriotic outfit with 4 projects to wear from head to toe and she is over the moon with how her stars and stripes outfit turned out! Most of all I hope that the end goal isn’t a ribbon, but instead developing sewers for life.
