Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
It seems like I’ve got a million thoughts and yet nothing to say. Let me explain a little more today on Ranch Raised.
Living where we do and marching to the life we live is pretty isolating and I’ve come to say that in an endearing way. Our thoughts and every move are in a vacuum this time of year and revolve around cattle work, only this year the weight of the drought is compounding our regular stress. The month of May is Beef Month, but it also reminds me why so many have stepped away from this industry, from production agriculture in general.
As social media is my window into the “real world”, I simply can not imagine keeping up with summer ball schedules when there is so much fence to get around, AIing to do, cattle to work, and cattle to move to summer grass. A couple of our kids have birthdays within the next month and I’m lucky to throw some steaks on the grill and get a cake for them with all of the ranch motion.
I can totally see how many who grew up watching their parents work 12-14 hour days only to end the evening sitting at the kitchen table and divide up which bills would get paid this month and which would have to wait until their was more money in the checking account, stepped off the hamster wheel and into an adulthood where they could check out of work at 5 pm, go to the lake on weekends, and rely on a paycheck every other Friday. It is a life that seems worlds away from the one we live, but I can understand why people like me are almost an extinct breed. If we aren’t getting beat up by the markets, then Mother Nature is trying her darnedest to run us off.
