Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

All learning IS learning! Thanks for starting your week with me right here on Ranch Raised!

I just finished one of my new favorite audiobooks, in fact I would peg in my top 5 recommendations for all parents. It is by one of my favorite authors, Ginny Yurich, and it is called “Until the Street Lights Come On.”

Somewhere in recent evolution, society has shut the door on the outdoors, literally. Why have we strayed away from free play and especially as it pertains to being outside. When did we become a society that felt it was safer to hand our kids a device to access the entire world, when we won’t even let them play with the kids down the street?

I’ve talked before how statistics have shown that children today measure their time outside by a mere minutes a day, when 20 years ago, kids stayed outside from sun up to sun down. And I ask myself, “are we better for it?”

Why has learning been redefined to how a kids score on a test? All learning IS learning! The engineers of today were building backyard forts with sticks and boards 20 years ago. Let’s get back to normalizing riding bikes and backyard ball games, hours spent at the neighborhood parks, and letting kids solve their boredom with outdoor activities that they come up with on their own. Free play is the ticket to letting kids grow up healthier and more fulfilled and none of it requires a swipe of credit card or investment on your part.

About Karina Jones 475 Articles
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion. Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA. You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch. Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
