The Bookmobile! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
Just for context, we live in the top cow/calf county in the country. In fact, cows outnumber people 30 to 1. I am so thankful for the people that have came before me that came up with solutions to provide services to those of us who live so remotely in a county roughly the size of the state of Conneticut.
One of those services is the Bookmobile. See, in the this entire county, there is only one public library. That library has creatively made way to serve a huge geographically area by putting books and resources on wheels, and thus we have a county bookmobile. This bookmobile drives the eastern side of the county on one week and the western side of the county on the next week. This bookmobile also serves as the school library to public schools in our county. The library recently reported that 70% of their entire checkout inventory is through the Bookmobile.
Of course being a homeschool family, we are extremely thankful for this service. This morning my daughter and I drove almost 30 miles to meet the Bookmobile that drove 60 miles from their home base to our little community on the edge of the county! We were able to grab a pile of books, DVDs, and audiobooks to enjoy over the next 2 weeks when we meet back up.
We may not be an area flush with big shopping malls, neon lights and fast food joints but we have a Bookmobile and for that I am so grateful to live where we do!
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Merriman, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
