Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
Thank you for winding through the work week with me, right here on Ranch Raised.
The days are ticking and flying by. The holiday hustle and bustle has dust flying and wrapping paper rolling, or anyway that is what they tell me. I tend to keep it pretty simple. I look around at what is available to me in my rural area and make my gift giving lists based on what I can get locally.
I figure my family members can all purchase their own stuff off of the big box online stores. But it takes special foresight to grab a gift certificate to a local coffee shop, café, or steakhouse. It takes some thought to pick up an evergreen centerpiece from the local flower shop or green house. It takes care to check out the local small-town boutiques and pick out a special jewelry piece or grab a gift certificate. And even lumber yard usually has a quiet a few of my needs!
Last night I was able to attend a local vendor fair and I checked a lot off my list! I was able to grab some whipped tallow hand cream for a special friend who spends a lot of time in the barn, some pretty things for my girls, and some yummy things for the boys in the house. And more locally roasted coffee for me of course, to start my mornings off with a taste of local.
What shopping locally saves me in time and energy is valuable. What shopping locally returns in value to my community is priceless. As I’ve said before, this holiday season, “Be Vocal, Shop Local.”

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Merriman, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
