Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies. Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised! As we roll through the month of May, those of us who enjoy gardening are getting “the itch”!

We have had an unseasonably hot & dry spring. There were many high temperature records broken across the western half of Nebraska. I have done a little more early planting than usual with pretty high confidence that I don’t anticipate a late freeze. Now our temperatures look to moderate and be a little more seasonable.

My kids got me a perfect mix of garden supplies and empty hanging baskets. My mom got me some beautiful flower to plant. So now I am even more excited to get go indulge at our local greenhouses which really are a community gem! Not only are they full of beautiful blooms and plentiful plants that can feed your family, but they are also a great source of knowledge that they willingly share with anyone who asks. It is just like any small business in our rural communities, if you don’t support them now, you will wish you did when they aren’t around! And hats off to the school ag programs and FFA chapters who are providing their communities with greenhouse options! You can bet that I totally endorse supporting those kids, also!

So while I wait keep pacing myself planting my garden, I will tell you that my rhubarb is thriving this spring! My husband just picked another pick batch of rhubarb which is my signal that I better get to baking!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
