Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

The spring sprint! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.

They tell us every season is a marathon, but if you are in farming and ranching, you can probably identify that most days feel like a sprint. The cattle are shelling out calves left and right. There is always calf processing and pairing out to do. Then the day ends with feeding, feeding and more feeding. That is just a standard calving day, never mind if there are curveballs thrown you way like the occasional set of twins, dystocia, or equipment problems.

Then there are the obligations of the family, especially if you have school aged children. To many farming and ranching parents, spring can feel like you are on the hamster wheel of life, being beaten with every rotation. And honestly, I don’t even know the half of that exhausting pace as we don’t have kids in public school, so my hat is definitely off to those families!

Even in the chaos of spring, I am trying to remind myself to find the pearl in every day. Like the slow drizzle we had this morning, albeit too brief, that brought us back inside for a warm cup of coffee or plentiful basket of eggs the hens are providing everyday. It’s watching the kids play in the yard or begging to have their horses saddled first thing in the morning to go ride heavies. Its dreaming of the garden you are planning and knowing you are just weeks or days away from having that dirt in your hands and your vision coming to life.

I hope you are finding the pearl in your day!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
