Feeling alive! Thanks for starting your week with me right here on Ranch Raised.
I saw a question recently pondered on social media, “What makes you feel alive?” As a rancher who holds our responsibility to our herds in high regard, times like these make you feel alive! There is a certain super human pulse of energy in the livestock world right now for those who have to care for livestock. Right now men and women are battling an arctic blast that has a deep grip on this country, a death grip on parts of the midwest.
It is times like this when men and women tap into a divine resource of energy that few will ever know. There is no time to question anything. You just have to add on the layers and put one foot in front of the other. You put livestock above yourself. You don’t shut down until all animals are cared for.
It is times like these when you feel very alive. There is a blast of air that hits you and tries to cut through you. There is ice that hits your face that you swear might scar. There is stress of immeasurable proportions. But, there is also hope and faith that many will never know. The faith that we will be held and seen through these tough times. The hope that by looking at the forecast, we are in for rising mercury and a reprieve.
There will be time for rest towards the end of the week. But for now, we battle mother nature and most definitely feel very alive!
Stay safe, stay warm and have a great day!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
