If you can’t stand the heat, get out of ______??? Seriously, it’s me! I can’t stand this heat. Where do I go? Thanks for tuning in to this special Friday edition of the Hot Barn Report!

Last week the heat was on at the annual R-CALF USA convention! Industry topics and speakers were on fire talking about issues that cattle and sheep ranchers face every day. A panel of sheep producers from Utah, South Dakota, Nevada, and California gave firsthand accounts of how imports of lamb have decimated the domestic industry. A once vibrant sheep industry powered the western states. Now that industry is a mere skeleton of itself, and they are calling on federal attention and help immediately! This action is gaining international attention as of course our counterparts down under are not taking too kindly that the US sheep producers are calling for tariffs on imports of lamb. This panel of producers is not standing down any longer and are fighting to save their livelihoods that have been sold out in the name of free trade.

Mike Callicrate, a Kansas rancher, and owner of the Colorado Springs based Ranch Foods Direct gave a firsthand account of the challenges that small, independent meat processors like himself face every day dealing with the heavy scrutiny of the USDA. While on farm and small processors jump through hoops to keep their doors open, it begs the question as to why massive processors and even one of international origin that has been linked to known bribery and scandal are able to get a pass from the USDA and self-inspect. Infact, come to think about it, there is not a USDA inspector every day in any of the plants from the 20 plus countries we import from. Seems like a blatant double standard!

One of the most chilling presentations was from Erica Valdez. A New Mexico rancher who grew up and ranches 40 miles from the US/Mexico border. After seeing the pictures of what they find on their ranch and listening to the stories of her detailing what happens in her area, you are left speechless. Actually, it left me thankful that the good Lord placed me in central NE to chop ice 4 months out of the year because I am not tough enough to deal with what those ranchers face down there! The keynote speaker was internationally renowned Dutch farm advocate, Eva Vlaardingerbroek. What has happened to the farmers in the Netherlands and Ireland needs to be a lesson to all of us around the world. Feeding the world is a noble profession, so it is so hard to believe that farmers and ranchers are under attack, but that is the reality. This is an issue that doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

And if all that isn’t heavy enough, we had a heat dome move over the Midwest this week bringing massive challenges to those very people that just want to tend to the land and their herds. The Hot Barn Report highly applauds and salutes all those that had to work in the blistering heat this week from linemen to well diggers, farmers and ranchers and all the people that keep the world spinning! Thank you for holding it together and beating the heat, literally!
