Welcome to the 109th day of January! I mean January 23rd, 2023. But for real, doesn’t January always seem like the longest month of the year?
We are just coming off of 5 glorious days with all of our kids home because of snow days last week. There were movies, snuggling, crafts, snowball fights, playing in snow, snow forts and gallons of hot cocoa.
Is there anything better then when dad pushes up a huge pile of snow to dig in to, sled down or play “King of the Mountain” on? My youngest daughter was pretending that one snow pile was Mount Crumpet, the home of The Grinch! I would venture to say that if you ask any adult they will agree that a big snow pile in the yard or neighborhood is on their childhood memories highlight reel!
A new activity we did to pass the time and play was making “snow cookies”! My 7 year old daughter packed snow onto a bar pan baking sheet. You will want to make sure that the pan will hold water. She then pressed cookie cutters into her snow pan. I mixed up food coloring and water in a muffin tin, but you could use watercolor paints. Then she went to town painting and decorating her snow cookies! We will definitely be doing that again!
Come back tomorrow because I might have some new news! We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our first baby goats. There are bets going around the barnyard that we won’t have to wait much longer! You can bet I will share the news with you just as soon as those little stinkers arrive.
Have a great day!
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch.
Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
