My face hurts.
My Shoulders are burning.
But the cows can drink.

We are socked into the most miserable ranching season, ice chopping season. As the artic blast pounds my face, while I whack away at the layers ice thoughts run through my head like,
“Is this what frostbite to my face feels like?”
“Will my face be black the next time I look in a mirror, like in the movies?”
“Why do I live in a place where the air hurts my face.”
“I hate ice.”
Ice chopping is a pain, literally! If it’s not your face, fingers, and toes freezing, it is your shoulders and back burning! You are using muscles you haven’t flexed to that degree in a while, but like my husband says, the soreness works itself out and we become ax wielding, power chopping machines. I mean by the time ice chopping season is over, I visualize myself as an Olympic athlete of sorts. I maybe be little dramatic if you haven’t noticed.
I like to help the muscle relief on a little. I can hear by grandma saying, “Just go take a sitz bath and you will feel better.” Since I am a little bit hippie, an Epsom salt bath is how I prefer to end most bitter, winter days. Come back to Ranch Raised tomorrow and I will share my love for this simple, inexpensive pain-relieving option that gets me through this dreaded ice chopping season.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
