LINCOLN, Neb. — The spotlight of youth rodeo will swing back to Nebraska this summer as National High School Finals Rodeo returns to Sandhills Global Event Center, bringing thousands of contestants, horses and spectators to the capital city.

In an interview on the Territorial Rodeo Update, marketing manager Gina Nathan said Lincoln will host the event July 19–25, marking the first time since 2021 the city has welcomed what is often referred to as the “world championship of high school rodeo.”

“We’re expecting over 1,300 contestants and more than 2,000 horses,” Nathan said. “It’s going to be a party.”

The NHSFR, held annually, features the full slate of traditional rodeo events, from roughstock competitions to timed events, but with a unique focus on the next generation of athletes. Performances will take place daily throughout the week, with action spread across multiple venues on the grounds.

Organizers plan to utilize two outdoor arenas running simultaneously, along with indoor pavilion arenas, creating a near-constant schedule of competition.

“There’s going to be something happening everywhere,” Nathan said.

The scale of the event is expected to generate significant demand for lodging, with officials encouraging visitors to secure accommodations early. Information on hotels, campgrounds and event details is available through the official NHSFR Lincoln website and local tourism resources.

Since last hosting the finals, the Sandhills Global Event Center has undergone more than $10 million in upgrades aimed at improving the experience for contestants and fans alike. Improvements include expanded campground amenities, additional paved roads, upgraded restrooms, new playground facilities and the addition of air conditioning in several pavilions.

“There’s going to be a lot more places to cool off during that July heat,” Nathan said.

Beyond the arena, organizers say visitors will find plenty to do in and around Lincoln, including shopping, dining, museums and family attractions. The event will also feature a large Western trade show on-site, offering free admission and a wide range of vendors.

Lincoln’s proximity to Omaha — less than an hour away — adds to the appeal for out-of-town guests looking to extend their stay.

With high school rodeo season underway across the country, planning is already ramping up for what is expected to be one of the largest youth rodeo gatherings of the year.

“This is a national event,” Nathan said. “And we’re excited to welcome everyone back to Nebraska.”
