Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
The essentials! Thanks for starting your week with me right here on Ranch Raised!
Today I want to pay tribute to my trusty sidekick, that is with me from sun up to sun down. It is always in my coat pocket sort of like a dirty secret. Because I fear if I let those around me know how much I truly love this little darling, they might find some affection for it and elope with it. I am talking about my twine cutting knife!
See I am in a season of life where I am responsible for a lot of cattle feeding chores at our south place while my husband is over 200 miles away calving cows at our north place. So, a few things had to happened to make my new routine run well. First of all, I had to find a twine knife. If you know anything about feeding baled hay to cattle, you know that an instrument to cut twines can make or break your day. There is nothing like driving a few miles from home to feed and realizing, “Hey, I forgot my knife” or “oh no, my knife must have fell out of my pocket.” Or even worse, you are hostage to using a dull knife.
But, alas, I knew there was a knife that was in the depths of the junk drawer with a freshly sharpened blade that was about to live up to its calling. I don’t know if my husband forgot about this little treasure or what he is using up north to cut twines, but I have claimed her as mine. The only other cattle feeding essential that I am pretty smitten with are my gate openers. I have a 2010 model and a 2015 model. My husband has the trusty 2007 model and breaking in the 2022 model.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
