Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

Shut the door, you are gonna let all of the flies in! Welcome back to Ranch Raised!

Yesterday I basked in the fact that we live in an area where fall can be experienced by all of our senses. While taking in the splendid colors of fall are my favorite way to feast my senses, it seems that the some other pesky little creatures really want to be seen!  Because fall is also synonymous with “fly season.”

Why oh why Lord, did you create the pesky fly? Reveal it’s importance to me in the greater animal kingdom! Is it to drive us all mad? To provide us with a distraction from every other problem in our lives? Whatever it is, I may never understand.

But, fly season does seem to come in tandem with canning season. And while my canning season is late this year, the flies seem right on time.

Even away from the house, my husband is reporting that despite our best investments in fly control mineral and salt with garlic, the cows are still fighting flies. While we secretly pray for cool nights to knock them back, I have to keep in mind that I can’t pray to fervently, as a I have a garden full of goodies that still need to mature.

Good golly, I am in quite a conundrum. So I will just keep swatting and spatting at the flies and hollering at the kids to shut the door faster and reaching out to all of you to ask, what do you do fight the flies around your place? I already have fly strips hanging from nook and hook! It is a really a sight. I should see if Johnna Gaines needs any real and rustic farmhouse décor ideas for the season.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
