It is the summer slide, right into the county fair! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
If you’ve been wondering what has been going on around the Jones Ranch, it is mix of sugar, flour, paint, prairie hay, and sweat! We are in the thick of county fair season. We are blessed with a pretty robust county fair, which means multiple entry days to accommodate so many exhibitors. Our girls have already participated in the dog show, clothing and modeling day. Today they will enter their glass fusion, pottery, and ceramics along with a few other items. They always have big goals to get more done, but their love for being in the barn and showing livestock has capitalized more of their time than they anticipated. My husband is busy buzzing around in his baler trying to get hay put up.
Today will also start the relay of clippers whirling non stop to get all of their cattle, sheep, and goats clipped and ready. They will take a break to whip up some muffins and scones to enter this weekend.
Usual ranch chores don’t stop just because the county fair is going on and you can bet that surprises even pop up. While we usually grab eggs out from under broody hens, we clearly lost track of a few banty hens while we were going back and forth to Hereford Junior Nationals. Well, now we have a few chicks that have peaked out from underneath them. To say my kids and I are in love would be an understatement. We have never had baby chicks hatch in our barn so this has been such a cool surprise!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
