Let’s take a look back at how it all began, today on Ranch Raised!
It is really sentimental to me that yesterday we celebrated our 500th episode of Ranch Raised. I thought it would be fun to take a walk down memory lane this week and see where we came from and maybe by the end of the week I will know where we are going.
If you know me it is probably because we have a common thread in either kids or cows, or both. So, it should be no surprise that Monte James found me at none other than the sale barn. Now, this could go one of two ways with such a country meeting. Apparently, Monte didn’t gate sort me into the cull pen but instead decided I had some potential to be added to the Your Ag Network herd.
I started by being a weekly editorial guest on the Hot Barn Report, which turned into a permanent Friday feature. Then I was presented with the opportunity to take off with my own show. Crazy story….I originally turned Monte and Jesse down. I was still very green to this radio world. Monte literally found me in a sale barn, so if that doesn’t tell you that I had no radio experience, I don’t know what does.
I guess you could say my belief in myself was a little short at that point. But after a few months of Monte and Jesse working on me, I finally said yes.
So there you have it. Sometimes it takes someone else believing in you more than you believe in yourself to start something new that becomes something beautiful.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
