🎥Nebraska Ranch Family Steps Up for South Dakota Ranch Family After Wrestling Injury

BURWELL, NE – In ranch country, neighbors do not just share fence lines. They share burdens. And this week, that bond stretched from South Dakota to the Nebraska Sandhills.

According to reporting by KELO-TV, Arlington, South Dakota junior wrestler Sutton Murphy is recovering after suffering a serious spinal injury during the Mid Dakota Monster wrestling tournament in January. Murphy fractured two vertebrae and dislocated another after falling on his head during a match. He was airlifted January 10 to a Sioux Falls Hospital, where he underwent four hours of surgery and spent ten days in intensive care before transferring to a Colorado rehabilitation facility.

While there is not yet a prognosis on his ability to walk, his family says his youth and strength are in his favor.

Support for the Murphy family quickly rallied across wrestling communities, with fundraisers, auctions, raffles and school support helping offset mounting medical and travel expenses. You can donate to the family here.

But this week, support also came from cattle country.

At the annual Cedar Top Ranch producer bull sale near Burwell, Nebraska, Scott Starr of Cedar Top Ranch in Ringold paused the auction to speak from the heart.

Starr told buyers that Chad and Catherine Murphy and their family had often attended the Cedar Top sale, sitting in the top section of the barn. This year was different. Instead of being ringside, their son Sutton was watching from a rehabilitation center in Colorado.

The Murphy family had two bulls consigned to the sale. When Lot 1 entered the ring, Starr announced that the proceeds from that bull would be donated back to the Murphy family to help with medical expenses.

The Lot 1 bull brought $8,500, purchased by Todd Downer of Bartley, Nebraska.

In a business where margins matter and cattle checks are hard-earned, the gesture carried weight. It was more than a donation. It was a reminder that ranch families measure wealth in more than dollars per head.

Sutton continues rehabilitation in Colorado and is expected to remain there until early April, when doctors will reassess next steps in his recovery. He is also continuing his schoolwork while in rehab.

From a wrestling mat in South Dakota to a sale ring in Nebraska, the message has been clear.

Ranch country rides together.
