Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
They say, “birds of the feather flock together.” Thanks for tuning in to Ranch Raised.
When I made my Ranch Raised pregnancy announcement a few weeks back, I referenced that I had moved back in to the fall calving herd. If you remember back to this summer, I shared that we had to make the hard decision, because of the drought, to sell our fall calving herd. So our usual days of finding fall born baby calves in the tall grass is just a memory this year.
It looked like I would be the only animal around the Jones Ranch welcoming a new life, but that was before we would be embarking on a new barnyard adventure, that I thought I would give an update about. Yes, our broody little hen is still sitting on her dozen eggs.
It is ironic and amazing to share a season of life with a chicken! I really didn’t see my life story developing this way, but here Penelope, the hen and I are, awaiting our miracles to arrive. We are both surrounded by children that cannot contain their excitement for the arrivals. While I haven’t had a personal conversation with Penelope, she is looking about as exhausted and achy with the process as I am. We are hoping to meet her new little brood in 6-7 days.
I hopefully will still be sitting and broody, baking my little baby bun a bit longer than that. But, I will bask and rejoice in the arrival of her babies all the same. The girls also tell me that there is looking like some fall baby goats may surprise us as a few does are looking a bit “heavy”.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch.
Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
