Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
Preparing for the future! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
The USDA has just announced that they expect food prices to rise another 3.2% this year and the incredible expensive, I mean edible egg will cost consumers possibly over 57% more than last year. I am not telling you this to insight panic. I’m bringing this to you to encourage planning. See my nature is to be a problem solver. The fixed variable in this problem is my food budget or at least what I am willing to spend at the grocery store. Since I can not control the price of food, I must problem solve from a different angle. I think I am not the only one in this boat.
The bright side, is we are headed into spring, which can bring a lot of positives for any households food budget. Of course I am an advocate of producing as much of your own food as you can. But, if a beef in the backyard and a garden isn’t in your cards, there are still ways to save money on food this time of year.
Failing to plan is planning to fail when trying stay with in a budget. Look at your local grocery stores weekly ad and plan your meal around budget friendly food choices. Almost all local egg dealers are selling at reasonable prices. As well, buying your beef or meat of choice in bulk locally is usually a good deal. While we have to wait just a little longer for farmers markets to open, if we focus on in season, nutrient dense produce we have a lot of budget friendly options this time of year.
With some planning and meal preparation we can all take some pressure off our wallets when putting food on the table.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
