I’mmmmm baaaaaack!!!! Welcome to this special Halloween Edition of Hot Barn Report!
Just a little update about your favorite HBR guest contributor. My family and I welcomed our new little cowboy one month ago! We are getting all settle back in to our new normal and enjoying every minute of those baby snuggles!

Monte is back to burning up the black top checking in with the Hot Barns that power this program and still hunting for best sale barn café pie, so that brought me back to the air chair!

On this Friday before Halloween, I think it is only fitting to talk about some of the spookiest situations happening in the cattle industry!

This week Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) Omaha identified about 45 thefts from meat packing plants, that happened across six states since June 2021. Investigators said a “highly sophisticated” group of criminals out of Miami, Florida, were targeting beef and pork packing plants.

The thefts happened in Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. The estimated loss across all six states totaled $9 million.

First of all it is scary that criminals are able to hi-jack and drive away with millions of dollars of meat right out of packing plant parking lots! But, what I find to be SUPER SCARY it at local law enforcement, remember the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department was a major part of this investigation, just for reference that is the county sheriff’s department is in Lincoln, NE, has solved and arrested the suspects of this “highly sophisticated” crime escapade, YET, our Department of Justice has yet to solve any of the allegations surrounding the 2019 Holcomb packing plant fire. A fire that took place in a concrete and metal facility that caused a complete disruption to the cattle market. It is almost 2023 and we still don’t have any response from Department of Justice about that investigation! With Halloween right around the corner, I’m sure Scooby Doo and his gang are looking for extra mysteries to solve. I feel like we should just call them up and see if they can crack the Holcomb fire code!

Another scary scenario that we are all facing is $5 diesel and climbing interest rates! Oye vey! While these feeder cattle prices are exciting and the fat cattle market is getting some legs under it, there is another side of the balance sheet that is taking the wind out of our sails. The reality is that we can’t be so focused on the gross profit that we forget the net profit situation! I will talk more about this next week and why we can be silent about the cattle industry reforms that are still needed!
