Welcome to the Friday edition of the HOT BARN REPORT
Heard ONLY on American radio stations across the nation and online at hotbarnreport.com!

Karina Jones, Field Director for R-Calf USA joins us each Friday from her ranch in the heart of Nebraska covering new and important cattle industry news and policy.

All signs point to current and tightening supplies of fed cattle!
The USDA just released data that showed a sharp trend towards tightening fat cattle supplies. Grading of Choice + and Prime fat cattle have now fallen below the 5 year average. While carcass weights are still a bit more robust than the 5 year average, this is probably due to genetic advancements. The fact that these cattle are not grading high choice and prime with as much vigor, means that supplies are tightening and we are moving them through the feeding phase with less days on feed.

We know that there are less cattle going into the supply chain as I have reported in the last few weeks, yet why do we remain stagnant with fat cattle prices hanging in the $1.40s? The answer might be because the packers don’t need our cattle. Remember the Big 4 are global corporations who operate on a global scale. They can source cattle and beef from all over the globe, namely 20 different countries that we currently import from.

That beef or those cattle from Canada and Mexico can not only displace our domestic supply, I fear we will watch them replace what the American cattle industry can not fill in the meat counter. And who will ever know? That imported beef will have a USDA inspected label on it, just the same as yours or mine. That imported beef could even have a “Product of USA” label on it, if it was repackaged or minimally processed on American soil.

The only we will return leverage back to the American cattle industry is to put the power in the consumer’s hands. But we cannot do that unless we are giving the American consumer accurate information to make an informed buying decision! The American cattle industry doesn’t want to be a tax payer liability. We have confidence that our friends, family and neighbors will support us at the meat counter if they have accurate labeling to make that consumer decision.

There is only one way to make that happen and that is by reinstating mandatory country of origin labeling on beef. That way if Suzy homemaker wants to buy a pot roast from Brazil she can or Sirloin from the USA, she can choose accordingly, just likes she get to do when she buys grapes or clothing.

Let’s flood Congress with 10,000 emails this week telling them we want to reinstate mandatory country of origin labeling and we want their co-sponsorship of The American Beef Labeling Act. We have already had around 2000 emails sent in the first few days! Just visit LabelOurBeef.com and it quickly connects you to your elected officials with that message supporting MCOOL! Easy Peasy!
