Surprise! Another Tuesday edition with me, Karina Jones, filling for head honcho Monte James, right here on Hot Barn Report.
First off, let’s recap some recent news in the cattle industry that has been pretty stunning. To no surprise Tyson reported first quarter record profits. It was splashed over all major ag media outlets, I guess to throw salt in the wound of independent cattle feeders that fight to even get a bid while feeding $6 plus corn with forage costs higher than a certain Super Bowl halftime performer.
According to Reuters, JBS agreed to pay $52.5 million to settle litigation accusing meat-packing companies of conspiring to limit supply in the U.S. beef market in order to inflate prices and boost profit.
The preliminary settlement by the Brazilian company and its U.S. units with so-called direct purchasers was disclosed last week, and is the first in nationwide antitrust litigation over beef price-fixing.
This is NOT the cattle producers and R-CALF USA anti-trust case. That is the initial anti-trust case against the Big 4 Packers. This is a subsequent case that was filed by retailers.
Despite all of this news, lawmakers and some groups still wear their rose-colored glasses with pride and are opting to “compromise” with these packers to support weak legislation that offers no reforms to protect the American cattle industry. Ho hum!
