It’s my first Friday Hot Barn Report of 2022 and we are bringing in the new year with a bang today at Crawford Livestock Market in Crawford, NE. Big run of feeder calves that have been weaned a long time and are ready to go to work for you! If you can’t make it to Crawford, check it out on cattleusa.com!
But let me tell you folks, it’s fixing to be a big time at Crawford Livestock Market today. The entire Hot Barn Report crew, Monte James, Jesse Stroud, and yours truly will be there as we not only celebrate one of the hottest barns around but also come together to support the R-CALF USA calf sale fundraiser being hosted there today! Big thanks to Dyesville Angus of Hermosa, SD for donating a heifer calf for the fundraiser. They brought their string of heifers to town today and you will take a look if you are needing some of the replacement kind.
I am excited to report that we have two more Senators who have signed on to the American Beef Labeling. Senator Barrasso from WY and Gillibrand from New York! Support continues to swell for mandatory country of origin labeling on beef! So continue to stay loud and proud of American beef!
The Biden-Harris administration made a pretty big announcement earlier this week….like $1 BILLION dollars big! They announced that they are going to funnel $1 Billion dollars to small and medium sized processors. It will be a multi-phase approach and unfortunately, they didn’t provide many details. The elephant in the room still remains. 4 multinational conglomerates control 85% of the beef supply chain. While we are glad the administration is looking in our direction, I’m afraid this solution is a big miss. It is an expensive band aid when we’ve got an arterial hemorrhage. So we stay at the front line pleaing with the administration to enforce the Packers & Stockyards Act, the Clayton Act and Sherman Act. There were other promises made in this announcement like strengthening the Product of USA label, but folks I have to caution you. That is a voluntary label. We can not accept anything less than mandatory country of origin labeling. Packers and retailers have had decades to voluntarily label beef and we have all seen how willing they are to comply.
Big welcome to Creighton Livestock, in Creighton, NE for joining up with the Hot Barn Report family! I visited this barn earlier this fall when they hosted an R-CALF calf sale fundraiser. I was so impressed with their entire crew and their sincerity in wanting their cattle producing customers to succeed! Ryan and Joel and their entire crew were just a stellar bunch to work with, so if you are north east Nebraska and have cattle to market give Creighton Livestock a call.
